BRANDON OLIVER

Children at Risk, a Houston-based nonprofit, releases annual rankings that evaluate elementary schools across Texas.
These rankings measure:

  • Student achievement (STAAR performance)

  • Growth from year to year

  • Achievement relative to poverty levels

The goal is to help families and communities understand how local schools are performing academically and where support is needed.

How East Central ISD Performed

Significant Academic Growth

Two ECISD schools were among the region’s most improved:

  • Highland Forest Elementary posted one of the largest score increases in all of San Antonio, jumping from 43.1 to 78.3.

  • Sinclair Elementary also improved its score from 13.5 to 44.9.

Gold Ribbon Recognition

Children at Risk awards Gold Ribbons to high-poverty schools that excel academically — honoring campuses that outperform expectations relative to their demographics.

Three East Central ISD campuses earned Gold Ribbon distinctions:

  • Highland Forest Elementary

  • Salado Elementary

  • Oak Crest Elementary

This places ECISD among a limited group of districts with multiple Gold Ribbon campuses in 2025.

In Summary

The 2025 Children at Risk rankings highlight ECISD’s growing academic strength, with:

  • Major year-over-year improvements

  • Strong performance in schools serving high-poverty communities

  • Three campuses earning top-tier Gold Ribbon honors

ECISD’s results reflect continued progress and meaningful gains across its elementary schools.
