Tax Rate Information

Responsible Stewardship. Stronger Results. Brighter Futures.

East Central ISD is committed to providing an excellent return on the investment our community makes in public education.

For the 2025–26 school year, ECISD’s total school tax rate is:

$0.9319 per $100 valuation. This is the lowest school district tax rate in Bexar County.

By comparison, ECISD’s tax rate was $1.69 in 1998. Today’s rate is approximately 76 cents lower, representing a reduction of nearly 45%.

While maintaining a low tax rate and operating with comparatively low per-student spending, ECISD continues to deliver strong academic growth and expanded opportunities for students.

What the Tax Rate Means for Homeowners

A school district’s tax rate is applied to a property’s taxable value, not necessarily its full market value.

The state-required residence homestead exemption for school district taxes is currently $140,000.

Example: $200,000 Home With a Homestead Exemption

Calculation Amount
Home value $200,000
Homestead exemption −$140,000
Taxable value $60,000
ECISD tax rate $0.9319 per $100
Estimated annual ECISD taxes $559.14

Example: $200,000 Property With No Exemptions

Calculation Amount
Property value $200,000
Exemptions $0
Taxable value $200,000
ECISD tax rate $0.9319 per $100
Estimated annual ECISD taxes $1,863.80

These examples apply only the East Central ISD school tax rate. A complete property-tax bill may also include taxes from the county, city, hospital district, emergency services districts and other local taxing entities.

Actual taxes may vary based on a property’s certified taxable value, exemptions and other individual circumstances.

The M&O and I&S Tax Buckets

The Two School Tax Buckets

School district tax rates have two parts:

Maintenance and Operations

The Maintenance and Operations rate, commonly called M&O, supports the district’s daily operating expenses.

M&O funds help pay for:

  • Teacher and employee salaries
  • Classroom supplies and instructional programs
  • Transportation
  • Utilities
  • Technology
  • Maintenance
  • Student services
  • Other daily operating costs

ECISD’s current M&O rate is:

$0.6669 per $100 valuation

Interest and Sinking

The Interest and Sinking rate, commonly called I&S, is used to repay voter-approved bond debt.

I&S funds may be used for:

  • New school construction
  • Major renovations
  • Safety and security improvements
  • Career and Technical Education facilities
  • Transportation and operational facilities
  • Other voter-approved capital projects

ECISD’s current I&S rate is:

$0.2650 per $100 valuation

I&S collections are legally restricted and cannot be used for employee salaries, benefits or other daily operating expenses.

Together, the M&O and I&S rates create ECISD’s total tax rate of:

$0.9319 per $100 valuation
