Credit By Exam

East Central Independent School District
Credit by Exam Procedures

Credit-by-Exam (CBE) is a testing program offered by ECISD for enrolled students in grades one through grade 12. There are two reasons for administering CBE testing. First, a student may accelerate instruction or test out or “skip” a grade level or course without having had prior instruction. Second, a student may recover credit for a course or grade level if the student has had prior instruction and failed. Credit by Exam is not to be used to validate home school instruction or instruction for a non-credited private or public school. Course validation is administered at the campus level and not through Credit-by-Exam.

Students taking CBE with prior instruction must receive a 70% score or above in order to receive credit. To obtain credit by examination without prior instruction, students must obtain a score of at least 80% on each required exam. Students may only take the same subject exam twice and cannot take the same subject more than once per testing window.

Each exam will take approximately 3 hours. For high school students, all passing grades received will appear on the transcript, but the grades do not count in calculating a student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) or class rank.

Study Guides can be found at: https://highschool.utexas.edu/cbe_study_guides

Students should seek guidance from their school counselor before registering for a CBE.

East Central offers Credit by Exam opportunities at least four times a school year. Registration is required at least three weeks prior to the assessment so that tests can be ordered and received in time. The Registration form can be found here, or by calling your school counselor or the district assessment office.
