Mr. Joseph McKelvey

Mr. McKelvey is originally from Alice, Texas and was a member of the prestigious Alice Band Program under Texas Bandmaster, Bryce Taylor.  Being a student from this state-wide recognized band program was an inspiration for him to become a music educator.  He attended college at Texas A&M University at Kingsville receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education with cum laude honors, where he studied with master teachers including Dr. Nancy King-Sanders on clarinet, James Warth on saxophone, Dr. Jan Drath on piano, Dr. Robert Scott on organ, and music education methods and conducting with Bryce Taylor.

Mr. McKelvey began his teaching career in Beeville, Texas where he was the Associate Director Of Bands at A.C. Jones High School where he led the Mighty Trojan Marching Band to three U.I.L. marching contest first divisions and two area marching contest performances, as well as director of the Concert Band, leading it to it’s first U.I.L. sweepstakes at concert/sight reading contest.  Also at Beeville, he served as the 6th grade beginning band coordinator, and became the head band director at Moreno Junior High, where the Honor Band and Concert Band received U.I.L. sweepstakes awards, and the Honor Band advancing to the area level of the T.M.E.A. state Honor Band Competition.

Mr. McKelvey served as junior high head band director at Lockhart Junior High were his beginner bands received “excellent” ratings at the Pride Of Texas Music Festival.  Mr. McKelvey became the Director Of Bands at Mountain Valley Middle School in New Braunfels (Comal ISD) where his bands received “superior” ratings at U.I.L. concert contests as well as Runner-Up In Class at the Lone Star Showcase of Music in Dallas, Texas.

Mr. McKelvey became Director Of Bands at Heritage Middle School in June 2011.  In that time, the membership of the Heritage Band grew dramatically to it’s current enrollment of nearly 400 students.  The Heritage Band under Mr. McKelvey’s leadership received sweepstakes awards at U.I.L. and Outstanding In Class at the Lone Star Showcase of Music in Dallas, Texas competing against bands all over the state and country.  The Heritage Beginner Band was named Outstanding In Class at the Alamo Showcase of Music in San Antonio in 2015.

Mr. McKelvey is in his 17th year of teaching, and holds memberships with the Texas Music Adjudicator’s Association, Texas Music Educator’s Association, Texas Bandmaster’s Association, International Clarinet Association, The American Guild Of Organists, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.  In his spare time, Mr. McKelvey likes hiking, traveling, baseball, and hitting the coasters at theme parks!
