Curriculum Instruction and Assessment

Math Philosophy
East Central ISD envisions an inclusive and comprehensive math program that prepares students to excel in on-grade level experiences by providing students with engaging lessons based on student data, that encourage mathematical discourse and critical thinking to solve rigorous problems.

Instructional Time
Teachers design engaging math lessons through standards-based best practices. The following minutes of instructional time are devoted to these lessons:

• Kinder through Fifth - 80 minutes

• Sixth through Twelfth - 46 minutes

Science Philosophy
East Central ISD believes that science is best learned through age-appropriate, hands-on experiences that engage students. The primary goal of the science program is to increase the scientific literacy of our children. Science is a way of learning about the natural and social world. We believe it is important for students to know and understand the physical, mathematical, and conceptual models that were and are developed by science.

Instructional Time
Teachers design engaging hands-on science lessons through authentic classroom and outside investigations. The following percentage of instruction time must be devoted to these investigations:

• Kinder & First Grade 80%

• Second & Third Grade 60%

• Fourth & Fifth Grade 50%

• Sixth through Twelfth  40%

Social Studies Philosophy
East Central ISD believes that social studies is best learned through age-appropriate, meaningful, challenging, and active instruction that engages students. We strive to prepare all students to become productive citizens in a democracy. The disciplines of social studies are diverse, encompassing a wide range of content: archaeology, anthropology, economics, political science, history, geography, philosophy, and humanities.

Instructional Model
The 5E Instructional Model is based on the constructivist approach to learning, allowing learners to construct new ideas on top of their own understanding. The model goes through five phases (5Es): Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.
