Mental Health Awareness

School counselors and mental health staff are crucial to the support of our students. ECISD counselors provide preventative and responsive services for our students. Here are a few facts about mental and emotional health that demonstrate the need in schools. For more information, visit the data source links below.   • 1 in 6 children ages 2-8 have a mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder.

  • 6 million U.S. children are diagnosed with ADHD, a total of 9.8%

  • 1 million youth were impacted by substance use disorders over the last year.

  • 46% of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition sometime in their life.

  • 3 in 4 children with depression also have anxiety, and almost 1 in 2 have behavior problems.

  • 18.8% of youth 12-17 years old seriously considered attempting suicide. (Data from 2018-19)
