    Pair Share - Fill in the Gaps

    We all have had students come to us wondering why they didn’t do so well on the latest test or quiz, claiming that they really studied. Believe them!

    Consider this: if when taking notes they only wrote down 50% of the material -- even if they studied and retained 100% of THAT material - the best they can get on that test or quiz is a 50.

    Allowing students to share notes and fill in the gaps in their own notes at different times during your lecture/direct teach/presentation will help your students acquire a higher percentage of the material being taught.

    Before you start, remind students to write down as much information as they can during the direct teach. If they miss a part or a piece of information, have them skip a space/line and keep going! Remind students to be resilient.

    After about 2 - 7 minutes of instruction, allow students to pair-share the concepts they just heard/learned and fill in the gaps in their notes.

       

    Some ways to partner up: Find a partner, elbow partners, sole mate (someone with similar shoes), same color shirt, same birth month.

    These two techniques combined:

    • Increase student participation (TPT) because they are going to be asked at least twice to share information they acquired during the direct teach - with their peers
    • Increase material acquisition (content/study material)
    • Increase resiliency - they won't get a little behind in notes and then stop taking notes because they already missed too much info
    • Increase retention of material - they have to verbalize to fill-in-the-gaps with their partner
    • Increase student confidence - verbalizing material they just heard/learned to share with classmates
    • Allow students to process information during the pair-share/discussion which can lead to additional questions or insights
    • Provide an opportunity for the teacher to clear up any misconceptions and polish up their delivery
    • Decrease direct teach interruptions - by providing them with a time to recover what they missed during the presentation
